Sub Note for Mr. Winter’s Class

Note: I'm at home waiting for dryer repair on 5/16. I’m at a training class on 5/18. Students are working on completing assignments. If you have computer hardware problems that the students in the class can’t solve, ask someone to go to the office to get Nathan or Matt McNew.

Welcome to my classes. During Block A (8-9:32), Block B (9:35-11:10), Block C (11:55-1:27) students are working at their own pace and learning Microsoft Office 1, Office 2, Office 3, HTML programming, Flash beginning and advanced animation, Game programming, and Dreamweaver. Books are along the walls and across from the teacher’s desk. Our lunch period is from 11:15-11:50. You can eat in the cafeteria, in the teacher’s lounge upstairs, or at my desk.

Attached is a list of students. This includes the student name, the class they are in, and the computer they should be sitting at. I’ve also indicated which students can help you, a few to watch, and other comments.

Students get 90 points each day as part of their productivity grade for each minute they are working. On the attached page, please give me an estimate of how productive they are by writing the number of minutes I should take off by their name. Please circle their name if they are absent or put a T if they are tardy. For the office, there is a ½ page “Daily Report of Absentees.” Please write the student name and an A(bsent) or T(ardy) under the period (A, B, or C).

Please walk around and see if students are working or if they need help. You won’t be able to answer all questions, but you might be able to help the students troubleshoot by helping them lookup answers online or using the index of their book. Another suggestion is to have the students look at a project that worked and try to use that as an example for the exercises that have less instructions.

5 minutes before end of class turn on music to have students save their files and log their time. The CD player is behind you on file cabinet.

I count productivity minutes as follows:

bullet

Students login immediately when they get to class.

bullet

They start as soon as the computer is ready.

bullet

They are continuously in the programs related to their class.

bullet

At the beginning of class, all students go to my Web site (www.rickwinter.com > My Students > Whiteboard) read instructions and do the assignment.

bullet

Office 1, Office 2, and Office 3 students are in Excel, Word, or Access.

bullet

HTML students are in Notepad, Word, Excel, or an Internet browser.

bullet

Flash students are in Macromedia Flash, Word, Excel, or Internet browser. They can also create games.

bullet

Dreamweaver students are in Dreamweaver or an Internet browser

bullet

Students are not checking e-mail after the first 10 minutes in class, in a drawing program (except Flash), not surfing the Web, and especially not playing games.

bullet

If students are talking, it is not disruptive to others that are working. Some students are able to talk socially while working, but this should be limited and students’ eyes should generally be on their book or their computer.

bullet

It is OK for students to listen to music (through ear phones).

One student may leave at a time if they sign out on the clipboard on the bookcase to your right and take a small paper pass.  Students should limit their time gone to no more than 5 minutes.

There is a “Report of Substitute Teacher” form for your report in this folder to fill out and turn in to the office.

Fire Drills and Emergencies:

bullet

For fire drills, students go through the building, out the front door, and to the football field. Please take the enclosed green and red cards and your attendance sheet. Take attendance when you get to the field and keep students with you. Hold up a green card if all students are with you. Hold up a red card if there are any missing students.

bullet

See the enclosed pink sheet for more details on different levels of emergencies. If you have a problem, to the right of the door as you enter the classroom there is a silver plate with a black button to call the office.

Good luck and enjoy your day.
