Purpose: All students are required to have an email account to
communicate with me. Email is one of the major communication tools in
business and education. 80% of employers say that high school students need
to improve their written communications. We'll be working on this skill through
your daily emails to me.
This is the procedure you should use for every email to me unless I give you
different instructions.
- Open up Microsoft Word.
- In Word, type answer to one of the two questions in one or more
complete
sentences.
 | Tell me why you think it is important to have no spelling or grammar
errors in your emails to your teacher, someone you work with, or your
boss.

 | What do you think that 80% of employers used to make their judgment
about high school students' writing ability? |
Use Microsoft Word's red squiggly lines (right-click) to correct
spelling problems. Use Microsoft Word's green squiggly lines to correct
sentence problems. If you use Word, you should have no capitalization
errors, no obvious spelling errors, and no punctuation errors.
Start your email program. If you don't have an email account, go to
www.hotmail.com or
www.gmail.com or another free provider
and create a new account. You want to make sure that you can send
attachments.
Type in the Subject line: First Email
In the To: box put my email -- see picture below or
rswinter(at)jeffco.k12.co.us. Replace (at) with the @ sign.
In the message area, copy and paste what you wrote in Word to the email.
At the bottom of the email, type both your first and last name.
Professional Emails and Grading (10 total points if no errors):
 | Correct Subject: 1 point |
 | At bottom of your text: First Name: 1 point; Last Name: 1 point. |
 | Capital letters at beginning of sentences and for names. - 1 point
each error |
 | Words spelled correctly (use Word first and check for red wavy
underlines) - 1 point each error |
 | Proper grammar (use Word first and check for green wavy underlines)
- 1 point for each error |
 | For this assignment, you must have a complete sentence with
ending punctuation and at least one subject and verb. |
